The second-ever BC Championship sold out at 230 competitors in Vancouver this past weekend, nearly double the 136 who showed up in 2024 — and defending champion Luke Jankowiak walked in seeded only fourth against a deeper field. Final results weren't posted yet as of this writing, but the growth alone was the story.
A Sold-Out Field in Vancouver
The BC Championship 2026 ran August 7–9 at the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront, and it filled every one of its 230 spots — a jump from 136 competitors just two years ago. That kind of growth in a regional championship is a real signal: more competitors means tougher qualifying cutoffs, longer finals, and a stronger seed list. Jankowiak, the man who won the first edition, now has to fight through a field that outgrew him.
The event even reached local television. CTV's Your Morning Vancouver brought on Burnaby speedcuber Devin Raghu and Speedcubing Canada's Heewon Hwang on August 7 to explain what a championship of this size actually takes to prepare for — a rare moment of mainstream coverage for the sport outside competition circles.
China's Fastest Go Back-to-Back
While Vancouver filled up, China's two fastest 3x3 solvers, Yiheng Wang and Xuanyi Geng, competed on consecutive days at the Maoming Open and Zhanjiang Open in Guangdong, August 8 and 9. Anyone can have one great day. Backing it up the very next day, in a different city, against the same level of competition, is the harder test — sustained speed rather than a single lucky run.
PSL Michigan Closes Out Season One
The Premier Speedcubing League wrapped its inaugural season at PSL Michigan in Port Huron on August 8, with a Las Vegas championship berth on the line. That put the winner in the same room as two continental podium finishers already locked into Vegas: Kyle Santucci, the reigning NAC 2026 3x3 champion, and Valerio Locatelli, runner-up at the European Championship. Preview coverage flagged a Patrick Ponce–Morgan Yeh matchup as one to watch from the stop.
New Asian FMC Records for Jaehyun Jeong
South Korea's Jaehyun Jeong set both Asian records in Fewest Moves solving (FMC) — where the goal isn't speed but how few moves you can find to solve the cube, worked out on paper within a time limit. Jeong posted a 17-move single and a 19.33-move mean of three, both new Asian bests. The results came from Silent Korea Open 2026 in Anyang on August 1–2, but only reached wider coverage on August 7. Beyond that, it was a quiet week for outright world records — no new official marks were confirmed in any discipline.
